Do you want a unique experience in Sicily, in the heart of a UNESCO world heritage site? Siciliamia is looking for a permaculture intern to analyze and implement landscape designs. This is a fantastic experience for anyone wanting to put theory into practice. The previous permaculturalist intern had made many designs and sketches which now need to be reviewed, and implemented. Job description: Observe landscapes and energy flows through the eyes of a permaculture designer. Be able to document qualitative as well as quantitative observations. Be the driving force in the transition from traditional to regenerative agriculture practices. Be open minded to unconventional land practices, and willing to learn names and characteristics of native and endemic species. Document site analysis and finding the most beneficial plants for each land, for economic and ecological function. Get to know the area you’re working on; immerse yourself in the history and customs that have shaped Sicily’s peoples and landscapes. Thinking long-term, design properties to be more resilient, able to withstand a changing climate and extreme weather all while aiming to be economically viable. This could mean intercropping chestnuts among annuals and aromatics; the field is a blank canvas and you are the artist. It’s all a question of thyme. Assist in researching possible funds for young farmers and startups, Assist with business planning, and finding markets for selling products. Conduct Research regarding land requirements and permissions. Assist with administrative tasks. Requirements Have an advanced level of English language. Italian/Sicilian language is a plus. At least one intensive course of regenerative field work (ecosystem restoration camps, workaway, PDC course, Woofing, tree planting) Basic knowledge of regenerative land design ie: permaculture, syntropic farming, ecosystem services, ecology, agro-forestry, Able to distinguish Knowledge and Wisdom, be able to document observations that many may not perceive. Must enjoy the outdoors, and field work. If your hands aren’t calloused and legs don’t have cuts on them in the summertime, get out there harvest blackberries and wild asparagus!
